    Traditional ceramic material is hard, stiff, heavy and solid. However, in the design sector there is a requirement for materials which are flexible and versatile. Foam material tends to be lightweight, soft, squishy and airy. When the two are put together to produce ceramic foam it enables the material to be incorporated into furniture design for homes.     Nickel foam provided by Goodfellow was used as a scaffold template for the creation, through chemical vapour deposition (CVD), of graphene foam. The design of graphene-based hybrid nanomaterials for photocatalytic applications is one of the most promising areas of research in the field of water remediation. Read more

    Light guides

    PMMA light guide supplied by Goodfellow on an aerospace project has helped to identify charged particles as part of the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) on board the International Space Station. Read more

    Goodfellow has provided bespoke alloys for use by a world-leading aerospace manufacturer focused on satellites and engines. The client develops, produces and sells engines for commercial and military aircraft and satellites as well as offering a complete range of support services to airlines, armed forces and other operators, including fleet management.     Sector focus: Automotive

    Goodfellow provided the materials necessary for the development of an electric race car in the Formula Student project, which is an international engineering design competition comprising hundreds of teams across the world. These teams competed with their vehicles at a series of international events. With 8 cars in the portfolio, Goodfellow supported the development of the two latest prototypes, the FST 07e and FST 08e.     Wire provided by Goodfellow has been applied in the development of technical devices for the Defence sector. The components of these electrical devices are used by the army in a number of countries around Europe for different tactical applications.     Pulsating Heat Pipe

    The image shows Goodfellow aluminium pipes mounted inside an experiment to characterise the performance of a pulsating heat pipe in very low gravity (milli-g) environments. Pulsating heat pipes function by means of the specific distribution of vapor bubbles and liquid "slugs" within very thin capillary tubes, which then act as pumps. The technology is high performance, low cost and benefits from simple construction. A critical parameter of the construction is the internal and external diameter of the aluminium tubes supplied by Goodfellow.


    Energy absorption

    This video shows aluminium honeycomb as supplied bv Goodfellow to the University of Birmingham being tested at the Transport Research Laboratory for its energy absorption characteristics as part of the lightweight nose cone structure of a student race car.

    Formula Student is an international student engineering competition with Class 1 cars competing to similar rules as those used in Formula SAE in the USA. Student teams from around the world design, build, test, and race a small-scale formula style racing car.

    Particle Physics

    High purity gold target

    High Purity Gold Target

    This image shows the installation of a fixed high purity gold target supplied by Goodfellow reflecting light in the vacuum chamber of the Solenoid Tracker at RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. This target will be used to study low energy gold on gold collisions, looking for the transition from normal matter to a quark-gluon plasma.
